About Me

Basic Information

About me
I started with Beetles in 80s and currently I have '63 typ 14, '61 typ2 (split ownership) and '65 typ 34.

Typ 14 is complete and as daily driver in summer time but colors are wrong to be period correct, also many details missing or wrong. Typ 2 is inherited from my step-grandfather and it's more or less in shape I got it, just very gently repairs has been done, not to lose the history it has: I'm the second owner.

Typ 34 is a project I bought from Germany last summer, it needs a lot of work and all of that is ahead.

'65 rims + beauty rings + hub caps

Actually I have three correct rims (64-65) and I'd need one more and acessories for all 4 wheels.

I have also one older rim (62-63) which I could swap for newer ones and/or 64-65 beauty rings (8 slotted) and/or hubcaps. Don't have to be perfect, rest of the car isn't either and usable parts are much better than missing parts, which is the current situation.

Now with photograph of the surplus-rim (photo 1) and missing ones( photo 2).

  • Kharon8 replied to the topic Re: Wiring question, from the fuse block in the forums.
blue-white you say ... I can find only one matching wire and its white wire with blue stripes and that's the wire Bobnotch is suggesting: High beam warning light from "F1" (which the key claims to be a Windshield wiper switch, which it's obviously isn't, but a light switch), to high beam warning lig

"I re-profiled the blades to fit the key, which is not technically the correct way to do it as it reduces the security of the lock. The correct way is to replace the blades."

Yes, but I'd like to comment that modern car thieves use slide hammer to pull the whole cylinder out of the lock, in piece

The electronics of 60's radios are really good, the only problem is that they aren't stereo. Speakers ... well ... there were good ones but those are 50 years old now and speakers aren't for ever.

Most Blaupunkt-radios have 3- or 5-pin DIN-input (signal, signal ground, chassis ground and 5 pin ve

  • I just (last winter, actually) bought 145SR15 for my typ14, but that was from UK.

Freight from there to here up North (Finland) wasn't cheap. But I checked those and now I can see that that size is no longer available, just 145/65SR15. Phoh!

146/65 is low, very low and speedometer shows somet

  • I'd see 12V conversion as a safety measurement if you are driving in the dark (many don't do that much, so no problems), good H4 beats the original lightning 6-0 and you might even be able to find 7" HID lights somewhere, tripling the lightning power compared to H4.

    Unfortunately no-one produces

  • Kharon8 created a new topic Factory has finally realized .. in the forums.
that old Volkswagens are free advertising.

This is the effort I was actually expecting from the factory and VW has reversed it's old ways about 180 degrees (compared to what it was, say 15-20 years ago) and I have to admit that I like this better.

    See (unfortunately all in German):

Unfortunately "sealed for life" means the life of the joint, not the life of the owner.

Cheaper to manufacture and "service free" on the other hand but limited life span on the other hand.

Periodically greased joint lasts forever or at least longer than the owner. Of course this has a catch

  • Kharon8 created a new topic Vinyl cleaning suggestions? in the forums.
I went and ripped all the vinyl carpets from trunk(s) and now I've too many grey vinyl pieces with some kind of felt backing on the apartment floor.

Many of them were thoroughly curled and very dirty, but washing removed the majority of the dirt and getting them wet and letting them dry on flat s

I got these installed a week ago and yes, 380mm is the correct length for a '65 with drum brakes.

But I forgot to take a picture of those when installed, installation was proceeding so smoothly.

I've also a '63 type 14 but it's not drivable now, it needs a set of carburators and intake manifolds to run and preferably exhaust pipes and silencer to drive.

I took my clock (from type 14) to watchmaker school.

They sat on it about 8 months (I knew that beforehand, no surprise, no hurry) and it cost about 80 euros, but now the internals are like new.

They had to manufacture two axles from scratch and build bearings to both axles, both ends and o
