Window Winder Handle Identification
Library - Authenticity :: Interior

A controversial subject of authenticity is the "right" style window winder handle to use on your Type 34. Of the two styles photographed above you may notice that the lower set has a concave "dimpled" knob, while the top set have the rounded "domed" knob. The knobs are different too, with the dimpled one made of hollow plastic, while the domed one is made of more durable solid plastic.

It is now believed that both the dimpled version and domed version were fitted to all early Type 34s (1962-66). There are photos from sales literature that shows both styles across all years. So it's your choice to install whichever ones suit your personal tastes. Most owners feel the domed ones are more durable and easier to clean, and that they match the early ivory domed dash/seat knobs.

The handle on the dimpled one is a solid piece, while the domed is carved out and stamped with the VW part number 311 837 583 A. The dimpled one has VW part number 311 337 585 A.

The parts list book shows the Type 34 handle as VW part numbers

  • 311 837 581 (1962-65)
  • 311 837 581 C (1966 only)
  • 311 837 581 E (1967-69 with black knob)

This may not totally clear up the controversy, but at least the part numbers are there for your reference next time you find a window winder handle.
