Rear Compartment Liner
Library - Authenticity :: Interior

When a Type 34 is restored to original condition the body gets repainted, the interior gets reupholstered, and the engine gets rebuilt. One area that often gets overlooked is the rear luggage compartment. The sound deadening material is usually in poor condition and the engine trap-door material is usually disintegrating. When restoring this area it's important to know the two different styles of material so you get it done right.

In the early-1962 Type 34s (up to chassis 0 058 489), the rear compartment was covered with the same style material as the front area. The insulation surrounding the trap-door and the trap-door were covered with this solid material (see left photo). There were no text or arrows on the trap-door to indicate how to open/close the lid.

In the later-1962 Type 34s (from chassis 0 058 490 through the end of production) the rear compartment was changed. The insulation material now had a textured surface (different than the upper & side cover material), and the trap-door was also covered in this textured sound-deadening material. The trap-door also featured text and arrows informing owners how to run the two door release handles to open and close the engine lid. The who areas was then covered with a separate mat with two snaps to keep it in place.

Finding the original textured sound-deadening material for the rear compartment is impossible, as it has been obsolete for many years. The best was to restore this area is to buy modern insulation (at the same thickness) and then repaint the material to match the color of the upholstery material. Then you can repaint the arrows & text on the engine door to look new again.
