This is another one of those items that is either missing or deteriorated on many Type 34s. The Parts List calls it a boot - air cleaner (311 129 695 B) and it is the accordion rubber boot that connects the end of the air cleaner to the warm-air mixing box (see picture above). Many Type 34s you see that have these use some sort of standard screw-type hose clamp to secure them. When your car was new, VW used quick-release, handled clamps. They are similar to oil filter wrenches in a strange sense, but they lock into place. Take it from a guy that had his air cleaner off all the time fixing carburetor problems, these quick-release clamps are much easier to work with and they’re authentic to boot (no pun intended). They slip right over the edges of the boot and tighten up when the handle is flipped over...that’s it! Finding them can be a little harder. As always, take note of what they look like and keep an eye out at the salvage yards and swap meets. I found mine used at Bill & Steve’s. They were a little greasy from the previous tour of duty, but with a little straightening, degreaser and a wire-brush they look like new. I saw one of these at a swap meet recently for $1 (still attached to the warm air box!), so they shouldn’t cost much when you do find them. From Everett: These clamps were not used until the 1966-67 time frame (I do not know the exact date or VIN), and only on the air cleaner side. Of course, they are nice to have as it makes it much easier to remove the air cleaner quickly. |
